As part of the historic celebrations in 1976 to mark the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Mint struck a special one-time-only circulating commemorative Eisenhower Dollar coin. This was the first commemorative Dollar coin issued for circulation. This collection brings together all eight varieties of this coin, Variety 1 and Variety 2 versions of the copper-nickel Brilliant Uncirculated coins from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints,
Variety 1 and Variety 2 versions of the copper-nickel Proof coin from the San Francisco Mint, as well as the Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof 40% silver coins from the San Francisco Mint. It is a complete collection of the 1976 Eisenhower Bicentennial Dollar.
The Eisenhower Dollar was America's last large-size Dollar coin ever minted for circulation. It was introduced in 1971, and the 1976 coins were a one-year-only special issue that have been unavailable for more than 30 years.
The obverse of the 1976 coin features Dwight D. Eisenhower, the World War II hero and President of the United States from 1953-1961, plus the dual dates 1776 and 1976. The reverse is a one-time-only bicentennial design that features the moon and Liberty Bell to symbolize 200 years of U.S. history from the Declaration of Independence to the manned moon missions.
Two different versions of the copper-nickel coins were struck. Variety 1 has low-relief, bold lettering on the reverse, while Variety 2 has sharper and more delicate lettering on the reverse. Both Variety 1 and Variety 2 coins in Brilliant Uncirculated condition from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints are included, as well as the Variety 1 and Variety 2 coins in Proof quality from the San Francisco Mint. Variety 1 coins are rarer than Variety 2 coins.
The Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof coins in 40% silver from the San Francisco Mint were made only as Variety 1. There is a total, therefore, of eight coins.
Each coin is in original Brilliant Uncirculated or Proof quality, and the complete collection of eight coins is protectively displayed in a custom presentation case with a Certificate of Authenticity.
