On September 8, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96. She was the longest reigning monarch in British history and the world’s oldest head of state. Immediately upon her death, her 73-year-old son Prince Charles became king and will be known as King Charles III.
Officially, the king’s reign did not begin until September 10th, when the Accession Council met at St. James’s Palace. It was the first time in history that the ceremony was televised.
King Charles III’s wife, is now Queen Consort and the queen consort was crowned with the King, in a similar but simpler ceremony.
