These are the coins that actually helped America win the war! Nickel was a valuable component in the manufacture of guns, tanks, and airplanes, so to conserve this important metal for the war effort, the U.S. Mint made a dramatic change in 1942 and eliminated nickel from the 5¢ Nickel coin. Instead, the Nickel was made with 35% silver. Silver Nickels were minted from 1942 until the war ended in 1945.
This collection includes one vintage coin in Fine condition from each year of issue and each mint from 1942-1945. These are the first and only Silver Nickels in American history and they can be easily identified both by the date and by the large Mint mark over the dome of Monticello on the reverse. Regular Jefferson Nickels do not have this Mint mark. Silver Nickels were made at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints.
