The “Scandalous” 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter

This scarce 1917 “bare-breasted” Standing Liberty quarter caused quite a scandal when it was first introduced into circulation.  Because Lady Liberty’s right breast was exposed, the coin was publicly denounced as immoral.  Religious leaders used words like “obscene” and “filthy” to describe the coin.  Public pressure grew so intense that the Mint was forced to redesign the Quarter in 1917 – a suit of armor was crafted to chastely clothe Miss Liberty nearly to the neck in chain mail.

Bare-breasted Liberty quarters began to rapidly disappear from circulation, making them among the scarcest of vintage American coins. Just a fraction of all 1917 quarters are of this variety, making this a coveted addition to anyone’s collection of historic coinage. Each quarter is minted from .900 fine silver and is in VF (very fine) condition. Free velveteen display box included.
