September 11 Commemorative Silver Medal - W Mint - PR70 Grade

2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.  To pay tribute to those who lost their lives and their families, and to raise funds for the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, The United States Mint has issued a medal made from .9993 fine silver in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Each medal is certified as Inaugural Strike, with a strict Limited Edition of just 2,011 specimens.  They have been graded and certified to be in perfect PR70 Condition.  Proof coins are unlike regular U.S. coins, because they are struck at least twice on highly polished coin blanks to bring out the mirrored background and high-relief images.  These medals were struck at the West Point Mint, just 50 miles away from the World Trade Centers.

The medal’s obverse features Lady Liberty holding the Lamp of Remembrance with beacons of light stretching skyward behind her.  Inscriptions, as required by the public law, are ALWAYS REMEMBER and 2001-2011.  The reverse design depicts an eagle, symbolizing the strength of the survivors, families and Nation, against a backdrop of cascading water.  Inscriptions are HONOR and HOPE.  A portion of the proceeds from the sale of each medal will be paid to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum to support its operations and maintenance after completion.
