Seated Liberty 20-Cent Silver Coin

Minted for circulation for only two years in 1875 and 1876, the Seated Liberty 20-Cent Piece is the shortest-lived denomination in U.S. history.  Struck from .900 fine silver from the Comstock Lode, the coin was created as a tactic for increasing U.S. silver exports – it was meant to circulate on a par with the widely used silver Franc.  But the public absolutely hated this coin because its design, size and weight were too easily confused with the Seated Liberty quarter.

Less than 1.4 million specimens were produced, giving the Seated Liberty 20-Cent Piece one of the lowest circulations in U.S. Mint history.  What was unloved at the time is now a boon to today’s collectors who can add one of these scarce coins to their collections.  Just a tiny fraction remain in collectible VG condition.  A free display box is included to store this rarely-seen coin.
