Jack Nicklaus 2005 Royal Bank of Scotland Framed Note
In July 2005, legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus played in his last-ever major tournament – the British Open, which was played at St. Andrews in Scotland. It was also his 38th British Open tournament. As St. Andrews is the birthplace of golf, this was an appropriate place for Nicklaus to say goodbye to the game.
As part of the celebration, the Royal Bank of Scotland issued a special commemorative £5 bank note honoring Nicklaus, who won three British Opens. His first victory was in 1966 at Muirfield, while the last two (1970 and 1978) were at St. Andrews. As a result, all three of his British Open victories were in Scotland.
The commemorative £5 bank note features two images of Nicklaus – one with the British Open trophy and one with him swinging a golf club – as well as the Royal and Ancient Golf Club building at St. Andrews. The note was issued to recognize Nicklaus’ victories at St Andrews and stands for what his illustrious career has meant for the game of golf in Scotland and around the world. The other side depicts Nicklaus’ famous Golden Bear logo. One of the most important factors in this note’s collectability is that apart from Queen Elizabeth II and the late Queen Mother, Nicklaus is the only living person ever to appear on a Scottish bank note. He joins Alexander Graham Bell and Robert Louis Stevenson as the only non-royals ever to appear on a Royal Bank of Scotland note.
The note was formally unveiled at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, site of the 2005 British Open championship. It was released into circulation on July 14, the first day of the 2005 British Open championship.
Only two million notes were made, and just a fraction have been saved in original crisp uncirculated condition; most are in circulation. Fortunately, the note offered here is in original crisp uncirculated condition.
This note is displayed in a beautiful framed display with a 5” x 7” montage photo featuring six different classic images of Nicklaus playing golf. Together, the bank note and photo make a spectacular tribute to Nicklaus.
The frame is 8” x 10” and the bank note and photo are “floating” within the display, so that both sides of the bank note can be easily viewed. There is also a metal name plate on the frame that adds to the beauty and collectability of the piece. The framed display includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
During his career, Jack Nicklaus won a record 18 Majors (6 Masters, 5 PGA Championships, 4 U.S. Opens, and 3 British Opens), as well as 2 U.S. Amateur Championships. He played in a record 154 consecutive Major championships for which he was eligible from the 1957 U.S. Open to the 1998 U.S. Open. In total, he won 73 official PGA tournaments.
