This historic 10-piece Nickel collection features all major types of 5-cent coins minted by the United States.  With America’s first nickel having been minted over 140 years ago, this set offers an incomparable and all-encompassing tribute to the life of the 5-cent nickel and its historic place in American coinage.  The older coins display the rich patina of time and are an enduring memento from America’s storied past.  The collection contains these historic 5-cent pieces:

Shield Nickel (1866-1883) - Unlike today’s nickels, Shield Nickels were one of the first U.S. coins to be made of 75% copper and 25% nickel.  The shield nickel was the first five-cent piece minted in the U.S.

Liberty Head Nickel (1883-1912) - Minted from 75% copper and 25% nickel, it features a bust of "Liberty" on the front and the Roman Numeral "V" on the reverse.  These were the first nickels to be minted at the Denver and San Francisco Mints.

Racketeer Nickel (1883) - This coin did not have the word “cents” on it so con men of the day plated it in gold and tried to pass it off as a $5 gold piece.  As a result, it was minted for just a few short months and is difficult to find today.

Buffalo Nickel (1913-1938) - Also known as Indian Head Nickel, this coin was made of 75% copper and 25% nickel.  Regarded as one of the most beautiful American coins ever minted, this collector’s favorite embodies the spirit of the American West.

Jefferson Nickel (1938–2003) - America’s longest running nickel design, the Jefferson Nickel was only the third American coin to feature a U.S. President.  The reverse of the coin depicts Monticello, Jefferson's famous home in Virginia.

4 Westward Journey Nickels (2004, 2005, 2006-present) - These coins represent the first new nickel designs in more than 65 years and are the only commemorative nickels ever minted in American history.  The beautiful designs pay tribute to the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis & Clark’s historic expedition.
