After John F. Kennedy was assasinated in 1963, so great was our grief that a coin to commemorate him was rushed into circulation in just 3 short months. Never in American history had a coin been brought into circulation so quickly. Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro, the former and current chief engravers at the time, designed the coin a mere five days after Kennedy's death.
