America's Historic $1 Silver Certificates

Silver Certificate bank notes once circulated alongside other types of U.S. currency. Initially, each $1 Silver Certificate was backed by a Silver Dollar that was deposited in the U.S. Treasury and which could be redeemed by the bearer of the note. Starting with the Series of 1934, each note was backed by "one dollar in silver" instead of a Silver Dollar.

Each of these beautifully engraved Certificates features a portrait of George Washington on the front, along with the distinctive blue Treasury seal and blue serial numbers. The 5-note set includes:

Series of 1923 $1 Silver Certificate–The last large-size Silver Certificate, which is more than 40 percent larger than the small-size notes.

Series of 1928 $1 Silver Certificate–The first small-size Silver Certificate, known as the "Funnyback" because of the unusual design on the back

Series of 1934 $1 Silver Certificate–A short-lived series and the first Silver Certificate to be backed by "one dollar in silver."

Series of 1935 $1 Silver Certificate–The first $1 Silver Certificate with the now-familiar reverse design showing the Great Seal of the United States.

Series of 1957 $1 Silver Certificate–The last $1 Silver Certificate and the only full series with the motto "In God We Trust" on the back.
