2010 Clad Proof Parks Quarter Set in Mint Packaging

The United States Mint “America the Beautiful” Quarters Program is a multi-year initiative honoring 56 national parks and other national sites in each state, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, United States Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands.  Under this program, five new reverse designs will appear on the quarter-dollar each year beginning in 2010 and running through 2021.  The coins will be issued in the order in which the featured site was first established as a national park or site.

The first five coins released in 2010 feature Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Yosemite National Park in California, Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona and Mt. Hood National Forest in Oregon.  First-year-of-issue coins are the key to any collection – and the fact that these coins are the proof version in their original government packaging makes them even more collectible.  Proofs are the highest quality possible, and they are also the rarest.  They undergo a specialized minting process which begins by manually feeding coin blanks into presses fitted with special dies.  They are then struck multiple times so the softly frosted yet detailed images seem to float above a mirror-like field.  Only a limited number of Proof coins are produced each year and they are never made again.
