2009 Mint State Louis Braille Commemorative Silver Dollar

On March 26, 2009, the United States Mint released a commemorative Silver Dollar honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, who developed the "Braille" method of reading and writing used by the blind.

The coin was launched at the National Federation of the Blind headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. The Braille system uses a series of raised dots to represent letters and numbers; a person "reading" a Braille book or sign feels the raised dots with his or her fingers.

The coin shows a portrait of Braille on the obverse. The reverse features a child reading a book written in Braille, as well as a bookcase displaying the word "Independence."  Braille gives the blind an element of independence that did not exist before the invention of the system.

Also shown in the field above the child is the word "Braille" (abbreviated "BRL") in Braille code. The Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia in Brilliant Uncirculated condition in .900 pure silver. Brilliant Uncirculated means mint condition with its original mint luster. The coin is fitted into a custom velvet lined case for beautiful display or presentation as a cherished gift.
