2009 Louis Braille Silver Dollar - MS70 ANACS Grade

On March 26, 2009, the United States Mint released a commemorative Silver Dollar honoring the 200th anniversary of the birth of Louis Braille, who developed the "Braille" method of reading and writing used by the blind. The coin was launched at the National Federation of the Blind headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland. The Braille system uses a series of raised dots to represent letters and numbers; a person "reading" a Braille book or sign feels the raised dots with his or her fingers.

The coin shows a portrait of Braille on the obverse. The reverse features a child reading a book written in Braille, as well as a bookcase displaying the word "Independence." Braille gives the blind an element of independence that did not exist before the invention of the system. Also shown in the field above the child is the word "Braille" (abbreviated "BRL") in Braille code.

The Louis Braille Bicentennial Silver Dollar was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia in Brilliant Uncirculated condition in .900 pure silver. It is in Brilliant Uncirculated MS70 Condition, the highest possible quality for a Brilliant Uncirculated coin. The coins were certified in perfect MS70 condition by ANACS, the official American Numismatic Association grading service and one of the most respected independent coin grading services.

Each coin is encapsulated in a special sonically-sealed holder. A custom wooden presentation case is also included to store and display the coin.
