2006 Return to Monticello Commemorative Set

A collection celebrating the new 2006 “Return to Monticello” Nickel.  It includes the new 2006 “Return to Monticello “Nickel from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints plated in pure 24K gold, a 2006 Sacagawea Golden Dollar, and an original “Red Seal” $2 U.S. Note featuring Monticello.  This set comes in a custom presentation jacket.

The 2006 Jefferson Nickel features a never-before-seen portrait of Thomas Jefferson, and the reverse returns to an image of Monticello after a two-year hiatus for the 2004-2005 commemorative Nickels series.  The two Mint-marked coins are included, along with a long-out-of-issue $2 bill and seldom-seen Dollar coin in a unique commemorative presentation.

The 2006 Jefferson Nickel is known as the “Return to Monticello” Nickel.  It features the first forward-facing portrait of a President on a circulating coin.  The design also shows the word “Liberty” in Jefferson’s handwriting.  The reverse depicts Monticello, Jefferson’s home in Virginia.  It is almost identical to the image on 1938-2003 coins, but it has been reworked to show greater detail.  This coin technically completes the commemorative Nickel series for the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark Expedition.  Jefferson was President in 1806 when the Lewis & Clark Expedition returned from their historic westward journey.

This collection includes the historic coins from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints that are richly layered in pure 24 karat gold.  Also included is a third 2006 Nickel to show the portrait of Jefferson.   This coin is also layered in pure 24 karat gold.

The fourth coin in the collection is the 2006 Sacagawea Golden Dollar – America’s first golden coin as well as the first circulating coin to feature an identifiable Native American.  The 2006 coin was never released to the public but was available only to collectors directly from the U.S. Mint in a limited edition.

Sacagawea was the Native American guide who accompanied the Lewis & Clark Expedition in 1804-1806 on their quest to find a route to the Pacific Ocean.  Without her knowledge of the land, the expedition would have failed, and America’s westward expansion would have been delayed for many years.  The coin depicts Sacagawea with her baby, Jean Baptiste, on her back.  The reverse of the coin features an American eagle in flight, as well as 17 stars. This unusual number of stars symbolizes the 17 states in the Union at the time of Sacagawea’s journey with the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Also included in this collection is a classic $2 United States Note that shows a portrait of Jefferson on the front and Monticello on the back.  The $2 United States Note was last made in the series of 1963 and has been out of issue for more than 40 years.  It is remarkable because of the distinctive red seal and serial numbers on the front.  $2 bills are also the most seldom seen of all modern bank notes.

The coins and bank note are protected in a custom presentation jacket. Only a fraction of the limited-edition coins will be set aside for this collection, and very few of the original $2 United States Notes exist today.
