2005 Marine MS69 AND PR69 Silver Dollar Coin Set

To mark the 230th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps in 2005, the U.S. Mint released a magnificent commemorative Silver Dollar. It was issued in a very limited edition and was one of the most popular commemorative Silver Dollars of recent years. It sold out at the Mint very quickly. The coins offered here are in matching certified Brilliant Uncirculated MS-69 and Proof-69 DCAM quality.

On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized the raising of two battalions of American Marines, thereby creating the legendary institution today known as the United States Marine Corps. From the Nation’s birth to the present day, the Marines represent a proud culture of service and contribution in defense of the values and freedoms at the heart of the American experience. Today, the Marines continue to exemplify the warrior ethos that has made it a fighting force of international repute. The philosophy of the Corps – and of the hundreds of thousands of individuals who have earned the title "Marine" over the last 230 years – is simply stated in its core values: Honor. Courage. Commitment.

The obverse of the 2005 commemorative Silver Dollar features a rendition of Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal's historic photograph showing the raising of an American flag by the United States Marines atop Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima in World War II. Taken on February 23, 1945, it is believed to be the most reproduced image in the history of photography. The coin's reverse features the official emblem of the United States Marine Corps showing an Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.

Surcharges from the original sale of each coin were authorized for the creation of the National Museum of the Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia. Two versions were made – Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof. Both were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with the “P” mint mark. The maximum mintage of all coins – Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof combined – was only 600,000, which is why they sold out so quickly and why millions of collectors were disappointed.

This collection includes both the Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof coins, and both have been certified and graded as 69’s. They are MS-69 and Proof-69 grade. It is virtually impossible to find a matched graded set of “69” coins. All coins are graded on a 70-point scale, with 70 being absolute perfection – whether the coin is Brilliant Uncirculated or Proof. These MS-69 and Proof-69 coins are among the highest graded coins possible. They are virtually flawless and represent the highest quality from the U.S. Mint. Each coin is in a matching holder that certifies the coins as accurately graded. What’s more, the Proof coin has been certified and graded as Proof-69 DCAM (meaning Deep Cameo), so it is even better than a standard Proof-69 coin.
