1925 Stone Mountain Silver Civil War Commemorative

This unique commemorative coin owes its design to none other than the artist responsible for Mount Rushmore!  Gutzon Borglum was commissioned to carve a memorial to the heroes of the Confederacy, planned for Stone Mountain, Georgia.  In an effort to raise funds for this massive project, a solid silver coin was commissioned and sold for $1.

The coin’s obverse features Generals Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, mounted on horseback.  The reverse features an Eagle perched on cliff and the words MEMORIAL TO THE VALOR OF THE SOLDIER OF THE SOUTH.  Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the first coins were issued on January 21, 1925, General Stonewall Jackson’s 101st birthday.  While it took less than a year to authorize and strike the coin, the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial Carving wasn’t completed and dedicated until 1970.  Just 1.3 million of these coins were sold to the public, making them a scarce and unusual addition to anyone’s collection of American or Civil War era coinage.   These .900 fine silver masterpiece have been preserved for 85 years in well-detailed About Uncirculated condition.
