1879 Morgan Dollar - VF Condition

Morgan Silver Dollars were minted for 26 years, from 1878 to 1904, and then again for one year only in 1921. The coin contains over 3/4 ounce of pure silver and is the largest U.S. silver coin ever made for circulation – its diameter measures almost 1 1/2 inches wide. The obverse of the coin depicts Lady Liberty wearing a slave’s cap (an ancient symbol of freedom) with the word “Liberty” inscribed on a ribbon. The reverse features an American eagle holding an olive branch of peace and arrows of war.

Due to their high silver content, more than 50% of all Morgan Silver Dollars were melted by the U.S. Government to help cover the costs of World War I. Millions more were melted for World War II. And even more were privately melted in the 1980s when silver reached $50 an ounce. As a result just a fraction of these coins remain today. These 1879 Morgan Dollars are in collectible VF (Very Fine) condition and come encapsulated in a clear plastic holder for protection.
