1878-1882 S-Mint Morgan Silver Dollar Set
This beautiful 5-coin set contains the sought-after first five years of Morgan Silver Dollars struck at the famous San Francisco Mint in
1878, 1879, 1880, 1881 and 1882. As with any variety of coin, the first years of issue are "key dates" to own and collectors seldom have the opportunity to buy them together as a set. What's more, the coin press operators at the San Francisco Mint were known to pay careful attention to their craft and Morgans minted in San Francisco are among the best struck in the entire series. Each coin in the set is in coveted Uncirculated condition (high-quality Mint-condition coins that have not been circulated to the public for general use).
When it was first struck more than 130 years ago the Morgan Silver Dollar ushered in a new era in U.S. coinage. It became the legendary coin of the "Wild West" and because of its large size, solid silver content, stunning beauty, and historical importance, it is one of America's most popular collectible coins. The obverse portrays Lady Liberty wearing a slave's cap with an American eagle portrayed on the reverse. The silver for these coins came from the famed Comstock Lode in Nevada. Due to massive meltdowns over the years for their precious silver content, just a fraction of these San Francisco Morgans remain for today's collectors.
