"In God We Trust" US Two-Cent Piece
Did you know…the 1860’s Two-Cent Piece was the very first U.S. coin to feature the motto “In God We Trust”. Previously, there was no reference to God on U.S. coinage. But that all changed as strong religious fervor swept the nation during the Civil War. Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase approved the motto “In God We Trust” for placement on the newly issued two-cent piece.
The American public was wildly enthusiastic about the new motto, and its inclusion on both coins and currency would eventually become required by law. For this reason alone, the Two-Cent Piece has become forever famous. And because it was only minted for ten years (1864-1873) this cherished coin has become extremely difficult to find. Fortunately, when we discovered a small stash of these Very Good condition treasures, we purchased them immediately and are making them available exclusively to customers of this website.
